Outside Union Adventist University, students prepare for the worst

To passers by, the traumatic scene may have looked like a chaotic disaster, but to the students in the university’s International Rescue and Relief Program, the simulated mass casualty event was as close to real as it gets. Ahead of the chaos, the students were told minimal information. Adjunct professor Makinsey Lonergan said the class was told only that it was a mass casualty incident and given a general timeframe within their usual class period. The rest was left as a surprise, forcing them to think on their feet.

Student built electric vehicles power up at EVRON race

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's tractor testing track was repurposed Saturday as about 30 high school students raced their self-built, battery-powered go-karts. The go-karts, powered by a maximum of two car batteries, traveled dozens of times around the 0.42-mile track with the goal to complete the most laps within 60 minutes. The hourlong race brought together teams from Deshler, Friend and Wayne, as well as a team from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was the second of four Power Drive events hosted by nonprofit Everon: Electric Vehicle Energy Research of Nebraska.

'Ghost of university future' — UNL faculty hold jazz funeral for programs on chopping block

Slowly, the funeral procession trudged forward, east from Memorial Stadium on a winding path through the heart of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s main campus. The mourners carried four caskets, cardboard boxes painted black with shiny gold lettering spelling out the names of academic programs targeted for elimination, as they passed the College of Business and Architecture Hall.“This is the ghost of university future,” Sarah Zuckerman, an associate professor in the Department of Education Administration, said of the lead coffin. “This could be UNL’s future if we cut departments and kill the instructional part of the university.”

Training for the worst: Nebraska Task Force 1 practices skills in tornado scenario

While the sun was shining, the scene looked as though a tornado had torn through south Lincoln as members of Nebraska Task Force 1 conducted a full-scale training exercise this week.

Capt. Ashley Engler, the task force program manager, said the exercise began Wednesday afternoon and simulated the aftermath of an EF-4 tornado striking Lincoln.

Near the entrance of the Lincoln Fire and Rescue training facility, one scenario required crews to lift a concrete slab off a car to rescue a trapped victim. Nearby, another team worked to stabilize a damaged structure and prevent it from collapsing.

Students Prepare For upcoming Make A Difference Fair


The Make A Difference (MAD) fair is an event where middle schoolers present their research about social issues and what they are, why they are a problem and what everyone can do to help, along with promoting non-profit organizations. This year the MAD fair is being presented on May 7th, 2026.

No Coast Roller Derby teams losing their practice, competition space

Lincoln Sports Foundation officials notified the junior and adult No Coast Roller Derby leaders that the foundation received a $1.2 million donation to resurface the basketball courts, and it includes a stipulation that no roller sports are to be allowed on the new floors, said Meredith Killion, a board member of the No Coast Junior Derby.
